Study Programmes

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso has designed three special spiritual programmes for the systematic study and practice of Kadampa Buddhism that are especially suited to the modern world. These programmes are modelled on the three traditional Tibetan methods of study. The three programmes are: the General Programme, the Foundation Programme, and the Teacher Training Programme.

There are three reasons why we need to study and practice the teachings of Buddha:

  • To develop our wisdom
  • To cultivate a good heart
  • To maintain a peaceful state of mind

If we do not strive to develop our wisdom, we shall always remain ignorant of ultimate truth – the true nature of reality. Although we wish for happiness, our ignorance leads us to engage in non-virtuous actions, which are the main cause of all our suffering.

If we do not cultivate a good heart, our selfish motivation destroys harmony and good relationships with others. We have no peace, and no chance to gain pure happiness. Without inner peace, outer peace is impossible.

If we do not maintain a peaceful state of mind we are not happy even if we have ideal conditions. On the other hand, when our mind is peaceful we are happy even if our external conditions are unpleasant.

Therefore, the development of these qualities is of utmost importance for our daily happiness.

The General Programme

The General Programme provides a basic introduction to Buddhist view, meditation, and practice that is suitable for beginners.

It also includes advanced teachings and practices from both Sutra and Tantra.
It is taught at every Kadampa Buddhist Center and is an ideal starting point for those interested to find out more about Buddhism and meditation.

Classes, which are usually held in the evenings, are open to everyone and are supplemented by optional day courses, weekend courses, and meditation retreats.

The Foundation Programme

The Foundation Program provides an opportunity to deepen our understanding and experience of Buddhism in five areas:

  • The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment – through the study of the book Joyful Path of Good Fortune
  • Training the Mind – through the study of the books Universal Compassion and Eight Steps to Happiness
  • The Heart Sutra – through the study of the book Heart of Wisdom
  • The Boshisattva’s Way of Life – through the study of the book Meaningful to Behold
  • Types of Mind – through the study of the book Understanding the Mind

The Foundation Program takes approximately four years to complete and requires an enrollment procedure.

The Teacher Training Program

The Teacher Training Program is intended for people who wish to train as authentic Buddhist Teachers, and also for those who wish to gain a clear insight into Buddha’s teachings and deep experience of their practice.

All Resident Teachers of Kadampa Buddhist Centers follow this in-depth program of study and practice.

The program involves the study of thirteen texts:

  • The six texts of the Foundation Program plus:
  • The Bodhisattva Vow
  • Ocean of Nectar
  • Clear Light of Bliss
  • Mahamudra Tantra
  • Guide to Dakini Land
  • Tantric Grounds and Paths
  • Essence of Vajrayana

In addition to completing the study of these twelve texts, participants are required to observe certain commitments with regard to behaviour and way of life, and to complete a number of meditation retreats.

Participants can either begin with the Foundation Program and then enroll in the Teacher Training Program, in which case the subjects already studied on FP will automatically count towards TTP, or they can enroll in the Teacher Training Program from the outset.

In addition to the four years on Foundation Program, the Teacher Training Program takes a further eight years to complete.
